Maintaining your bronze is a very simple way to prolong the life of your sculpture. The patina is the coloration process that gives your piece its unique finish. The following are some basic guidelines in keeping up the appearance of your artwork. Atmosphere and direct sunlight play a big role in the frequency of your maintenance but as a rule of thumb indoor sculptures should be re-waxed once a year and outdoor sculptures two to three times a year.
Using a soft cloth or old T-shirt gently wipe your sculpture free of any dust or debris. A soft bristle paintbrush may be used for textured areas. If excessively dirty, a damp cloth may be used to gently wipe away debris.
Make sure the sculpture is dry, then using a soft bristle paintbrush apply a thin coat of Trewax (Trewax can be purchased from your local hardware store). When first applied the patina may darken but as the wax dries the original color should return.
Let set for approximately five minutes. Then gently buff back with a soft rag or that old T-shirt. You may repeat steps 2 and 3 until desired effect is achieved.
*Note Sculpture must be at room temperature or cooler, otherwise the wax will not be able to dry.
Begin by washing sculpture with soapy water and a fiber brush until all debris has been removed. Rinse well with water.
Next dry sculpture completely either by towel or natural sunlight, but be sure all water has been removed.
After all water has been removed make sure the sculpture is cool (early morning, shaded or in the evening) then begin to apply your Trewax. Just follow the waxing instructions from the previous section "indoor sculpture" and you'll be set.
